Dear Recycle Lady,
The photo of #2 COLORED plastics was very helpful. Please publish a photo of #2 non-colored plastics.
Examples are Good
Dear Examples are Good,
Thanks for letting me know what is helpful. This week’s photo shows some examples of #2 NO COLOR plastics, sometimes called clear plastics. Note, only bottles and jugs are recyclable locally, as that is all the buyer accepts. As with all recyclables, be sure the jugs and bottles are clean and dry before recycling them.
Dear Recycle Lady,
What is the breakdown of bins that are available to place my recycles in, so I know how to bag up my items?
New to Recycling
Dear New to Recycling,
The Greenbrier Recycling Center has bins for 11 different kinds of recyclables. Some recyclables have more than one bin. Each of the following bins are identified in large print: Magazines (includes colored paper & slicks), Newspapers, Office Paper, #1 Plastics, #2 Colored Plastics, #2 No Color Plastics, Steel Cans, Aluminum Cans, Aluminum Foil & Pans, and Cardboard. There is also a special place to deposit bagged shredded paper and there will soon be a container for collecting toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes and floss containers. There are examples of recyclables that belong in each bin on the shelf above the opening. They can be helpful when you begin putting your recyclables in the bins. If you are not sure whether an item is steel or aluminum, there is a magnet attached to the steel can bin to help you determine which metal it is. Thanks for joining the legion of recyclers who are faithfully filling the bins and helping to improve the environment.
Dear Recycle Lady,
Can I recycle canning lids? The flat ones with rubber ring on them. Can they be put into the bin with steel cans?
Canner
Dear Canner,
Yes, the flat lids, as well as the canning rings, can be recycled with steel cans. Just be sure they are both clean and dry.
Dear Readers,
Did you know that cigarette butts with plastic filters are one of the single biggest sources of trash and plastic in the ocean? Every year, millions of these cigarette butts are picked up on our beaches in an attempt to save the marine life. Just ONE cigarette butt can kill a fish.
