Penny Pitch representative Judy Steele was the guest speaker at the November meeting of the Maxwelton Ruritan Club. Penny Pitch has been serving the area since 1967. Steele spoke about the organization and its goal to meet the needs of families in Greenbrier County. This year will be challenging with the impact of COVID, which not only affects the fundraising, but the number of families who may be unemployed or have their hours cut at their jobs.

Penny Pitch provides a food box, toys, clothing and helps with utility bills- whatever is the greatest need. The organization has received at least 160 applications this year. Items will be distributed after local civic groups complete the interview process and determine the needs of each application. The fundraising goal this year is $65,000.

The Maxwelton Ruritan Club gave our annual donation of $500. If you would like to donate, please mail your check to Penny Pitch, PO Box 494, Lewisburg, WV 24901. You can also drop off your donation at the WV Daily News office in town.

The club will purchase gift cards for Wellspring, and members brought food donations for the Northern Greenbrier Food Pantry. The Maxwelton Ruritan club has been serving our community since 1953 and is known for operating our ice cream concession stand at the State Fair of West Virginia. We provide scholarships to local high school students, participate in Adopt A Highway, and give donations to local agencies. Our latest project is installing fire hydrants in the Maxwelton area.

If you are interested in being a part of our organization, we encourage you to come to meet us! The Maxwelton Ruritan club meets the fourth Thursday of each month – except November and December at the Henning Church of God beginning at 6:30 p.m. Bring a friend and a facemask, as we follow the guidelines for face coverings and social distancing. If you need more information, please email ldbowman84@hotmail.com or follow our Facebook page.
