After the killing of James Alvis on Saturday, November 7, in Rupert, Jonathan Cole McClung has been arrested and is being held in Southern Regional Jail.
According to the criminal complaint filed with the Greenbrier County Magistrate Court by Senior Trooper B.J. Borsman, the incident arose due to McClung’s belief his wife was cheating on him with Alvis. The resulting attack led to Alvis’s death.
On Saturday, McClung left his “residence in Charmco in an attempt to locate” his wife, suspecting “she was cheating on him.”
McClung was joined by another individual who the Mountain Messenger is declining to identify due to their age.
The two allegedly pulled into a shop in Rupert and upon seeing James Avlis, who the pair “believed to be involved in an affair” with Ms. McClung, attacked him.
“Based on multiple eyewitnesses, Jonathan … screamed ‘kill that mother f*****’ as they exited the vehicle,” reads the complaint. “Mr. McClung … attacked Mr. Alvis and according to witnesses, continued to beat Mr. Alvis as he fell to the ground until they were pulled off of him by surrounding individuals.”
The complaint also explains that during the statement given to police, both McClung and the other individual “stated they attacked Mr. Alvis by punching him numerous times.”
Alvis was transported to Greenbrier Valley Medical Center and was later pronounced dead as a result of the attack.
McClung has been charged with first degree murder and felony conspiracy as a result of the attack.
As of Monday, September 9, McClung was being held in Southern Regional Jail in Beckley.
