Josephine Hoke Alvarez

Born June 30, 1921 in Glace, she was a daughter of the late Verlie and Elsie Walton Hoke.

Mrs. Alvarez worked at the Hecht’s store in Washington, DC for 10 years before moving to Miami, FL in 1952, where she worked at The Burdines Store for 35 years prior to her retirement in 1987. During her retirement years she loved to cook dinners for special occasions and she loved to try out new recipes. Everyone loved the cakes she baked.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gil Alvarez; two sisters, Ecelle Wickline and Mable Ripley, and two brothers, Eugene Hoke and Eula Hoke.

Survivors include: her sister, Genevieve Horst of Lebanon, PA; three nieces, Carol Hamrick (Charles) of Maxwelton, Linda Knapp (Ronald) of Lebanon, PA and her caregiver, Myra Clendenin (Billy) of White Sulphur Springs. She is also survived by two nephews, Connie Horst (Ruth) of Myerstown, PA and Larry Wickline of Covington, VA; and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews and sister-in-law, Frances (Honey) Hoke of White Sulphur Springs.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Mar. 8 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, with Pastor Ralph Hubbard officiating.

Interment will follow in the Dowdy Cemetery at Glace.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Mar. 7 at the funeral home.

A special thanks goes to the staff at The Seasons Assistant Living in Lewisburg for the special care that she got the last three years that she was there. They were all very good to her. A special thanks also goes to the Hospice and the care they gave her the last two weeks she was living. Also thanks to the ones that stopped by to see her and the ones that asked about her. A special thanks to Cathy Hoke and her mother Maggie McDowell who stopped by The Season’s often to visit her, and to her special friend Ruth Arthur of Miami, FL, who called her often. She enjoyed those visits and phone calls.

Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, is serving the family.
