“Walk the Bridges” and “Count Your Steps” debut in Alderson on Tuesday, July 23, at the Alderson Community Market.
These activities are for teens and adults to increase physical fitness and enjoy camaraderie at the same time. “Walk the Bridges” refers to making a circuit crossing the pedestrian bridge, up Railroad Avenue, across the vehicle bridge (in the walking lane), and down Riverview Avenue back to the pedestrian bridge.
“Walk the Bridges” can be practiced alone or with a group, any time of day. Participants will be given a log to record the number of bridge circuits per day and asked to bring their log to the Market so their total for the week can be recorded and charted. When you exercise as part of group, there is more stimulus to maintain your regime. Even if you aren’t walking with others, just knowing you have a weekly report can help propel you out the door and over the bridges.
For “Count Your Steps,” Elizabeth Reynolds of the Greenbrier County WVU Extension Service will provide pedometers and a step log to keep track of your steps. Find out if you are getting enough steps in a day. Participants are expected to track their steps for at least two weeks, turning in their log at the Community Market. The simple fact of recording your steps is motivation to continue. You may join both “Count Your Steps” and “Walk the Bridges” if you like.
These two programs are made possible by the Alderson Community Food Hub and the Greenbrier Health Alliance. The Alderson Community Market is open Tuesdays from 3 to 6 p.m. in the parking lot of the Alderson Visitors Center (historic Gulf Station on Riverview Avenue).
