The Greenbrier East wrestling team is off to Huntington for the State Wrestling Championships.

It’s a very exciting and anxious time of year. I am so proud of the 10 wrestlers who qualified for the State Championships. Congratulations to Steven Martinez (Freshman), Waymon Browning (Junior), Landen Hoover (Sophomore), Zach Mullins (Junior), Cayden Hoover (Senior), Robert Blevins (Freshman), Alex Zimmerman (Junior), Owen Quinn (Junior), Nick Thomas (Junior) and Branson Sharp (Junior). I am also so thankful and proud of our whole team, coaching staff, parental support, community loyalty and school spirit for our wrestlers. It has been a fun year. There are too many people to thank individually for our success. So, if you are reading this article, THANK YOU!

Trivia: In the history of Greenbrier East wrestling, we have had two sets of brothers qualify for the State Wrestling Championships in the same year. Can you name them?

Upcoming events and highlights: The State Wrestling Championships are this weekend. (Feb. 21, 22, 23) Check WVMAT.com for times and information. The team is ready to make history. I am excited for everyone! We have a lot of post season plans regarding the banquet, camps, open mats, tournaments, etc. I will keep you posted. I will also give you the college decisions of our two seniors.

EGMS update:  Congratulations to Thomas Mullins (2nd), Carter Hamilton (3rd) and Chase Martin (8th) who all placed at the West Virginia Middle School Wrestling State Championship. Great job!

Eastern Greenbrier Wrestling Club: Congratulations to Cy Gumm (5th), James Godby (8th), Matthew Kesterson (6th), Will Godby (3rd) and Kaden Stone (6th) who all placed at the West Virginia Youth State Wrestling Championships. Good job wrestlers and coaches.

Miluk humor: If at first you don’t succeed… then skydiving is not for you. Ha!

Trivia answer: The two Greenbrier East wrestling sets of brothers who qualified for the State Championships the same year were Josiah Solak and Davis Solak in 2013 and Landen and Cayden Hoover in 2018 and 2019. All four of the men are recognized throughout our wrestling record books. CHAMPIONS on and off the mat!
