Henry Franklin Ayers, Jr., 86, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018, at UVA Hospital after a short illness.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 66 years, Loretta Ayers; daughters, Brenda Arnold (Robbie Arnold) and Karen Ayers; sisters, Margaret Halterman and Marsha Fogus; grandchildren, Brittany and Saylor Arnold; great-grandson, Braylon Calhoun; Cindy Weyen and many close family members and friends.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Henry Franklin Ayers, Sr. and Mary Lorena Buckland-Wickline; and his granddaughter, Amy Michelle Burdette.

Henry was born Apr. 30, 1932, in White Sulphur Springs. He was a proud veteran of the Korean War. He was stationed in Germany as a medic of the notorious “Big Red One” while also doing clean up efforts to rebuild. He was a painter at The Greenbrier for over 40 years until his retirement. He was a dedicated member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church of White Sulphur Springs where he faithfully attended service every Sunday.

Henry was the sweetest, kindest man you could meet. He lived by his military motto “No mission too difficult. No sacrifice too great. Duty first!” He was hardworking and cared deeply for his loved ones. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

Services were held Thursday, Oct. 11, at Emmanuel United Methodist Church in White Sulphur Springs where Pastor Shari Stilgenbauer officiated. Burial was in the Hillcrest Cemetery.

Friends called Thursday at the church before the service.

Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg is in charge of arrangements.
