Greenbrier Valley Theatre (GVT), the State Professional Theatre of West Virginia, is proud to present GVT’s original adaptation of Babes in Toyland. This holiday spectacle will run Dec. 1 and 2, Dec. 7-9 and Dec. 14-16 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee performance Dec. 10 at 2:30 p.m.

This musical extravaganza, adapted for GVT by Cathey Sawyer and Kermit Medsker, weaves classic Mother Goose characters into a beautifully rich Christmas fantasia that’s fun for the whole family. Featuring classic songs including “Go to Sleep, Slumber Deep,” “March of the Toys” and the title song “Toyland,” Babes in Toyland is the perfect show to get you in the holiday spirit.

In 2014 Greenbrier Valley Theatre premiered a Christmas tale filled with magic and imagination that could entertain everyone. This year GVT has brought this delightful show back to the stage, along with many of the original cast members

One of the returning cast members is actor and AEA member Kenny Wade Marshall. Marshall has also been seen at GVT in 2014’s Man of La Mancha and 2015’s Chicago.

Marshall is excited for a second chance at the role of Miss Muffet. He sees it as a chance to test himself and a fun challenge to see how much he remembers after three years and what he can do with his character.

“Sometimes the rehearsal process and run of the show are so fast that I leave a project thinking about what things I may have missed in the character or moments that could have been more clear and precise. It’s really fun to be able to explore that now,” the actor said.

Marshall holds a BFA from Santa Fe University of Art and Design. He began acting at age six. He would charge neighborhood children a penny to watch his one-man show of The Wizard of Oz.

Like Marshall, many local children are inspired to get onstage. GVTween Nathaniel Vincent has been involved with GVT for four years, and in the 2014 Babes in Toyland premiere he hopped across the stage as Peter Rabbit.

This year he will portray Little Boy Blue. While his memory of the original show is fuzzy, he does remember the fun.

“It’s hard to remember a lot from the 2014 show because I was little. I do remember that I made a lot of new friends,” the young thespian said. “I am excited to be back because I’ve grown a lot as an actor since then.”

Both actors are full of anticipation looking forward to the joy they hope to bring the audience and the good time they’ll have doing it.
