Travis Cooper of the Department of Environmental Protection’s Make It Shine program presented a community award to the Town of Alderson at their Council Meeting on Thursday, Nov. 14.
In presenting the award to Mayor Travis Copenhaver, Recorder Betty Thomas, Council Members Charles M. Lobban, Tod Hanger, Becky Keadle and Ann Eskins, and Community Service Worker Supervisor Jesse Willis, Cooper especially noted the work accomplished by the workers of the alternative sentencing program in keeping the riverbank and other parts of the town mowed, trimmed and free of debris.
The WV Make It Shine Program is a comprehensive program aimed at making West Virginia the cleanest state in the nation. Throughout the state, groups of volunteers, businesses, community organizations and local governments are working to accomplish this goal.
This award is given to communities who have worked to keep their environment clean and who have participated regularly in REAP programs. Communities designated as Make It Shine Communities receive two road signs to place in their community as public recognition of their efforts.
Mayor Copenhaver said, “We really appreciate this award and the recognition of our alternative sentencing program as a force for the betterment of our community. Jesse and the people who are doing work rather than languishing in jail are to be commended.”
