Working away on a crowded porch with the floor littered in sawdust from trimming boards, Mark Robbins does what God put it on his heart to do – help Joyce Surbaugh. He is just one, but perhaps the most committed, of a number of volunteers who are helping restore this house in Alderson from flood damage. He is part, and founder, of the God’s Soldiers United Volunteer Missions.
While he is from Alabama, and his ministry is based out of his mother’s house in Seabring, FL, the distance does not stop him from helping. A handyman by trade in his home community of Bayou LaBatre, AL, he is putting all his skills to good use. He is quick to say that he has not been the only one on this project. He gives credit to HeavenSent Ministry; the RHEMA Christian Center; Lewisburg Church of Christ; Samaritan’s Purse; and WFR Relief; as well as God’s Soldiers United for all the clean-up work, demolition, supplies and materials, and re-building help.
Alderson Flood Plain Manager and Zoning Officer Eric Duff said, “This guy has been amazing. He deserves some recognition for all the work he is doing.”
Mayor Travis Copenhaver said, “Alderson continues to appreciate all the volunteers we have helping our citizens. As time passes and memories fade, it is important not to forget those who have lost so much. Special thanks to Mark Robbins for all his work.”
