This October the Greenbrier Historical Society (GHS) is offering two cemetery tours – one on Friday, Oct. 21, and another on Friday, Oct. 28. Toni Ogden, curator for GHS and North House Museum, will guide visitors through the Old Stone and Pointer cemeteries.
Buried here are hotel owners, barbers, soldiers, nurses and victims of freak train accidents. Tourists will stand at the gravesides of the wealthy and the poor, the disgraced and the martyred, as well as victims of epidemics and battles. A governor is buried there as is the person who started the great Lewisburg fire of 1897.
The Old Stone Cemetery itself has an interesting hidden history, only recently uncovered. Did you know that it contains a paupers’ field, a portion set aside for Catholic burials, a still-visible carriage road and one family’s strategy to thwart grave robbers?
Tours will depart at 5p.m.from the North House Museum. Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. Donations are welcome and help to keep programs like this one alive and well. For more information, please call 304-645-3398 or email info@greenbrierhistorical.org
