Las Vegas, NV-The former Eve Merle Judy, 87, passed away peacefully in her home in Las Vegas, NV on July 16, 2013.
A memorial service was held for her on Monday, Oct. 14, at Andrew Chapel in Williamsburg. She was buried in the cemetery, near her parents and grandparents, along with her second husband, Dr. Julius Glick.
Miss Judy was born on Aug. 15, 1925, near Williamsburg. She grew up on the family farm, near her grandparents and many uncles, aunts and cousins. She graduated from Williamsburg school in 1943 as her class valedictorian, having already begun work in Washington, DC with the U.S. government.
After the war, Miss Judy returned home to attend Greenbrier College, graduating in 1949. During this time she worked as a writer for the new radio station, WRON, owned and operated by Bill Blake of Ronceverte (future state Adjutant General). In December, 1949, she married his youngest brother, Robert L. Blake, then the editor and publisher of the Grundy Starr in Grundy, VA.
At the onset of the Korean War, Lt. Blake was reactivated by the U.S. Navy, and Eva Judy Blake began her new role as a Navy wife. To this couple were born three children, Robert Burdine (Quonset Point NAS, Rhode Island), Barbara Anne (Pensacola NAS, Florida) and Brian Edward (Bremerton NAS, Washington). The Navy years saw many moves and long periods of separation, until LCDR Blake’s retirement in 1968.
Making their post-Navy home in San Jose, CA, Mrs. Blake returned to college in the early ‘70s, earning a Master’s degree in psychology. She began a new career as a child psychologist, able to apply her education and her vast life experiences to this field. In 1978, Mr. Blake died from lung cancer. His ashes were spread over the Pacific Ocean from a U.S. Navy aircraft.
In 1919, Eva J. Blake met and married Dr. Julius Glick, a pediatrician originally from Chicago. She changed her name to Judy Blake Glick, although her family always called her Eva. Having lost his first wife to cancer, Dr. and Mrs. Glick had much in common, including their love of reading and their careers specializing in children. They remained in San Jose following their retirements, until Dr. Glick’s death in 2009.
Mrs. Glick spent her last several months in Nevada, near her daughter, Barbara, who managed her affairs for years. She was very well attended by Caesar, then Sandie, her long-time caretakers. Her final days were comfortable and peaceful. Her wish was to be buried in the hills of West Virginia, near the home she loved so much, in the fall of the year. And so it shall be.
She is survived by: her brother, Sid Judy (Gin); her children, Robert Blake (Rhonda), Barbara Galloway (Dennis), Brian Blake (Babbie), Melissa Denny (Skip) and Dr. David Glick (Beatriz); and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
She was proceeded in death by: her husbands, Robert Blake and Dr. Julius Glick; her parents, Sam Judy and Ruby Suttle; her stepfather, Ford Gulledge; an infant brother, Harold Judy; her paternal grandparents, Virgil Judy and Icie Suttle; and her maternal grandparents, Henry Suttle and Susan Henry.
Down through the night of the ages,
Faithful and true ye have been,
Throwing ‘round lovers and sages,
Reiments of glorious sheen;
Stars of the midnight holy,
Stars of the soft summer sky,
Shine in thy beauty and glory,
Beam on me when I die!
Bringing me dreams of the loved ores there;
They who have gone on before!
Sooner to rest in those mansions,
Beautiful ever more.
