A new 15-week non-credit course, “Clinical Medical Assistant,” being offered by Dabney S. Lancaster Community College, has been rescheduled to begin Monday, Aug. 8, at the DSLCC Rockbridge Regional Center in Buena Vista, VA. At the conclusion of the course, offered for the first time by DSLCC through ProTrain, a workforce-focused educational provider, students will sit for the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA) exam. Students who successfully complete the course and exam will earn four national certifications: AMCA Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy, EKG and AHA BLS Healthcare Provider CPR.
The class will meet on Monday and Wednesday evenings, from 6-9:30 p.m., through Nov. 21, when the AMCA exam will be given. Prospective students must be high school graduates or hold a GED certificate.
The CMA course prepares students to be professional medical assistants dedicated to patient care management. Graduates will be equipped to assist physicians with examinations and treatment, take medical histories, perform diagnostic tests, expose X-ray films, sterilize instruments and supplies and assist with minor surgery.
The program includes 105 hours of instruction and an opportunity to complete a 120-hour externship, all textbooks, CPR training and certification, background check, drug screening, related medical expenses and equipment (shots, tests, stethoscope, etc.), instructional materials, practice exam and national certification AMCA exam.
The cost of the program is $3,795; however, students may pay only $1,265 if they qualify under the New Economy Workforce Credential Grant (WCG) program (terms and conditions will apply). ProTrain also offers a monthly payment plan which may be applied toward either the full tuition amount of $3,795 or the reduced $1,268 WCG amount.
For more information about the CMA program, or to inquire about the tuition payment plan, contact Doug Jones, programs coordinator for DSLCC Workforce Solutions & Community Education, at 540-863-2870 or djones@dslcc.edu. The Rockbridge Center is located at 35 Vista Links Drive, Buena Vista, VA.
