Sanders and Trump take WV presidential primary; Greenbrier County elects first woman judge

The West Virginia Secretary of State’s office has released unofficial results for Tuesday’s primary election. Below are election results for both Greenbrier County and the state as a whole. Winners are in bold. Official results will be available after an election canvass on Monday, May 16. The general election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

President

Bernie Sanders (D) 2,864 votes, 52.93 percent, state total 61,691

Hillary Clinton (D) 1,894 votes, 35 percent, state total 42,226

Former Texas penitentiary inmate Keith Judd received 63 votes in Greenbrier County with a state total of 2,516. In 2012, Judd took 41 percent of the West Virginia vote in the primary while he was in prison, and West Virginia Democrats chose him over Barack Obama.

Donald Trump (R) 3,005 votes, 76.25 percent, state total 67,002

Ted Cruz (R) 371 votes, 9.41 percent, state total 7,100

Justice of the Supreme Court of Appeals

William Wooton won in Greenbrier County, but statewide, Beth Walker won in this non-partisan election. Walker will replace incumbent Brent Benjamin.

State Senate District 10

Greenbrier County chose Kenny W. Mann as its Republican nominee, but overall, Tom Ewing won the Republican nomination. One candidate will be elected in November.

House of Delegates District 42

All three candidates were winners in this election. Voters will choose two delegates in the November general election.

Stephen Baldwin Jr. (D) 4,781 votes, 100 percent, state total 4,889

Ray Canterbury (R) 2,818 votes, 55.37 percent, state total 2,859

George “Boogie” Ambler (R) 2,271 votes, 44.63 percent, state total 2,319

Circuit Judge

Greenbrier County has elected its first woman circuit judge. Jennifer Dent won the seat in Division Two; she will replace retiring Judge James J. Rowe. Division One’s Robert Richardson retained his seat on the bench; he was appointed judge when former Judge Joe Pomponio retired in 2013.

Steve Hunter, 2,687 votes, 29.14 percent, state total 3,456

Britt Ludwig, 1,652 votes, 17.91 percent, state total 2,035

Division Two

Jennifer P. Dent, 4,895 votes, 51.76 percent, state total 6,063

Jeffrey S. Rodgers, 2,456 votes, 25.97 percent, state total 2,837

Family Court Judge District 15

With Monroe County not posting votes on the Secretary of State’s website until late Thursday morning, it appeared that Fleshman had overtaken Sanders by 23 votes. However, as of press time, Sanders appears to be the victor.
