Steve Malcomb has announced his candidacy for Greenbrier County Commissioner.
“I have the experience and the expertise to guide the county through the economic times that we face. I was elected and served on The County Commission from 1999 to 2004, during this time I helped accomplish and move Greenbrier County forward financially and progressively.
“During my tenure, the Commission adopted the Hotel Occupancy Tax (Bed Tax). This has enabled the county to grow through arts and recreation that this tax supports. Greenbrier County’s largest economic support comes from tourism. This tax supported the Rainelle pool, The Alderson 4th of July parade, and the Dandelion Festival, the Greenbrier County courthouse has seen some renovations, and the parks and sports leagues in the county have all benefitted. The arts and theaters in Lewisburg and throughout the county all prospered from this tax.
“Because of county and state legislation passed during my previous term as County Commissioner the funds necessary to build the White Sulphur Springs Sewage Treatment Plant were embarked and the plant was completed within a few years.
“I have a background in law enforcement, banking, finance and business. I attended the Charleston School Of Commerce. I understand the need to spend money wisely. During my tenure as commissioner Greenbrier County was able to financially create “The Rainy Day” fund for the county. The county had over $1 million in the fund when I left office. I am also proud of the fact that I was able to lower the county portion of the tax rate on real and personal property. The rate remained in effect for 11 years or until last year when it was raised by the County Commission.
“I am originally from Marlinton and after graduating, I worked for the First National Bank of Marlinton as a bookkeeper. I then followed a law enforcement career with the Washington, DC Metropolitan Police. I have an extensive background in drug enforcement and received numerous accommodations including National Geographic Magazine and several articles in The Washington Post, for drug arrests. After I retired to Lewisburg in the 1980s, I received an appointment to the U.S. Marshal Service in the eastern district of Virginia. I also worked as chief of security in the mining industry on the western end of Greenbrier County for Greenbrier Smokeless and Greenbrier Minerals.
“I was President of the County Board of Health, Member of the Greenbrier County Convention and Visitors Bureau, I served on the Greenbrier Airport Board and various other committees and bureaus dedicated to the betterment and improvement of Greenbrier County.
I enjoy the political arena, I stay active in political endeavors throughout the county. I was honored to be your County Commissioner and represent the people in Greenbrier County. I attend picnics, fundraisers and meetings and stay involved in the County, so I can be aware of problems and concerns of local people. I was a full time commissioner, I showed up for work every day and I pledge to serve you and continue with the same work ethic.”
