Lewisburg-Paul Mitchell “Mitch” Scott, Jr. passed away Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015. He was born Nov. 1, 1928.

Mitch attended Ronceverte Graded School and Greenbrier High School. He started his college career at Greenbrier Military School and transferred to Virginia Tech where he was a member of the HightyTighties, Virginia Tech’s Regimental Band, graduating in 1950. Mitch was a Hokie to the core, wearing his VT baseball cap and colors proudly. He was a Captain in the US Air Force, serving as a navigator in the Korean War. He started his career as a John Deere salesman and was a lifelong New York Life agent from his log cabin office in Lewisburg.

Mitch loved theater from his bachelor days in New York City. He was an actor in numerous plays produced by Greenbrier Valley Theater and a frequent cast member for his favorite, “Riders of the Flood” in Ronceverte. He also appeared in the 1987 movie, “Matewan” and frequently appeared in local TV commercials.

In 2007, Mitch and his wife, Liz, were awarded the annual Community Service Award from the Shepherd’s Center for their outstanding service to the community. He achieved one of his lifelong goals with the establishment of a memorial monument to fallen soldiers from the Greenbrier Valley located outside the Greenbrier County Courthouse. Mitch was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, a past president of Rotary International and a lifelong member of St. James Episcopal Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Mitchell, Sr. and Rena Scott of Ronceverte and his wife of 47 years, Elizabeth Johnson Scott.

Mitch is survived by: his daughter, Paige Hayes (Joe); son, Walker Henderson (Anne); his five granddaughters, Margaret Henderson, Laura Henderson, Heather Ashley, Samantha Pearson (Chris) and Melanie Johnson (Joe); grandson, Chris Hayes (Joy); and three great-grandchildren, Joseph Pearson, Ella Pearson and Travis Johnson.

A memorial service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church, Saturday, Jan. 23, at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to St. James Episcopal Church, 218 Church Street, Lewisburg, WV 24901.

McGraw Funeral Home in Lewisburg is in charge of arrangements.
