West Virginia 4-H has made the camping experience a priority in its programming for an entire century. With 4-H camps taking place in all 55 counties around the state every year, camping has come a long way from the inaugural “Camp GoodLuck” back in 1915. From fresh camp themes to classes that include everything from robotics to quilting, 4-H camping in West Virginia keeps improving and expanding.
Though things have changed, many traditions have prevailed throughout the past 100 years. The most anticipated tradition of the West Virginia 4-H camping experience is Council Circle. Taking place at the end of the day, council circle allows 4-H’ers to laugh over the jokes of the day, sing songs and reflect around the campfire. Campers team up and complete tasks in competition for the coveted spirit stick. The best memories are always made around that Council Circle fire every night.
This year, Greenbrier County 4-H has decided to take a spin on this old tradition. Join us as we open up a new year of 4-H with an impromptu Council Circle at the West Virginia State Fairgrounds on Oct. 4. 4-H members new and old, alumni, and anyone who “bleeds green” are welcome to attend. A short “tribal meeting” will begin at 5:15 p.m. with the Council Circle starting at 6 p.m. Bring your camping chair and be prepared to give a big “HOW HOW” to a new year in Greenbrier County 4-H.
