Lewisburg-John M. “Jackie” Goodall, 85, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015, at the Peyton Hospice House in Fairlea.
He was born Aug. 23, 1930, in Ronceverte to the late Frank Watson Goodall and Jessie Withrow Goodall.
Jackie graduated from Greenbrier High School in 1948 and served as a sergeant in the National Guard from 1947 until 1954. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Ronceverte. He retired after 32 years from the United States Postal Service and was a member of the Letter Carriers Union and National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Jackie was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was very devoted to community service and won numerous awards including, WVVA Channel 6 Hometown Hero, Elks Lodge Citizen of the Year Award and the Distinguished Citizenship Award. He also received the Greenbrier Interagency Council James Zabierek Volunteer of the Year Award from The Shepherds Center. In 2008, Jackie received the President’s Call to Service Award which was personally presented to him by President George W. Bush.
Jackie was also gifted with a beautiful tenor voice and sang at church, also in barber shop and gospel quartets, barber shop chorus as well as countless weddings, funerals and special events, Family and friends all enjoyed listening to Jackie sing as well as the community, in fact he was named “The Singing Mailman.”
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 57 years, Sally Landers Goodall; and two sisters, Vera Perry and Shelly Hoke.
He is survived by: his daughters, Jane Hughes and husband Ronnie, Pam Hamrick and husband Tig and Cindy Tucker and husband Bobby; four grandchildren, Jonathan Hamrick and wife Susan, Susan McCoy and husband Chad, Erin Hager, Chris Hager and wife Ginny; six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews; brother, Kenneth Goodall; sisters, Shirley Kramer and Sharon Moore; sister-in-law, Susan Fox; brothers-in-law Mike Landers and Dick Hoke.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 18, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg with Pastor Charles McFarlin officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
The family received friends Thursday evening, Sept. 17, at the funeral home.
