College Park, GA-Mary Cooke Cochran Daniel, 92, died on Saturday, June 27, 2015, of natural causes.
Mary was born Dec. 24, 1922, in Shiloh, FL, to John Gordon Cooke, Sr., and Agnes Rigg Cooke.
In 1941, she graduated from Greenbrier High School in Ronceverte, attended Concord College in Athens, and in 1943 joined the U.S. Navy WAVES. Active duty tours included the Naval Advanced Base Depot at Gulfport, MS, and the Naval Supply Depot at Pearl Harbor, HI.
While in Hawaii, she married Charles Edgar Cochran of Fairburn, GA, and later married Austin Wilson Daniel of Menlo, GA. She received a BA degree in Sociology from Georgia State University in 1977 and was employed for 22 years by Aetna Life and Casualty Insurance Company in Atlanta.
She was a long-time member of Red Oak (GA) United Methodist Church (now merged with Cliftondale UMC) where she served as church secretary, editor of the church newsletter for 20 years, and was active in the United Methodist Women’s organization at local and district levels.
She was predeceased by her husband, Austin W. Daniel, Sr. and a brother, John Gordon Cooke, of Jacksonville, FL.
Survivors include: sons, Charles Gordon (Rachel) Cochran of Decatur, GA, and Austin Wilson Daniel, Jr., of College Park, GA; brother, Stephen St. George (Sue) Cooke of Ronceverte; sister-in-law, Shirley Thomas Cooke of Greenville, SC: nine grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services were held on July 2 at Holly Hill Funeral Home in Fairburn, GA, with interment in the Veterans’ Section of Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in College Park, GA.
