On Tuesday, Apr. 28, Greenbrier East High School along with Communities In Schools and multiple community organizations will be hosting an evening of important, need-to-know sessions geared towards students and parents.
The evening will begin in the cafeteria at 5:45 p.m. with a free dinner prepared by the GEHS Pro Start culinary program and sponsored by the GEHS NNPS committee. At 6 p.m., the program “Internet Safety & Social Media” will begin. The program is being presented by Greenbrier Technologies & Electric in partnership with local law enforcement, Communities In Schools, and the Child and Youth Advocacy Center. There will be agency presentations and then a panel discussion for parents and community members to ask questions about the issues facing our students when they enter the online world. Many important topics will be addressed, such as:
• Personal safety such as privacy settings, how students identify themselves online and leaving a digital footprint
• Legal implications such as bullying, criminal harassment and child pornography
• Current trends in child/youth online victimization
• Controls parents can put in place to keep their children safe while exploring the online world
No registration is required. All parents are encouraged to attend, especially those with children in middle school and high school. Door prizes will be awarded.
After the Internet Safety program, GEHS Counselor Mike Vincent and GISGC Site Coordinator Cindy Solak will hold the last town hall meeting of the year for the Class of 2016 and their parents. It will begin at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria. The town hall meeting will help students and parents prepare for the busy year ahead and beyond. Topics will include graduation requirements, transcripts, credit recovery and co-op options. Each student who attends will receive a copy of their transcript. In addition, information on financial aid, scholarships, grants and loan options will be presented. Come out and see how college can be affordable.
Also starting at 7 p.m., 10th grade Counselor Dina Buly will host a Sophomore Parent Night presentation. The state of West Virginia requires that all students in tenth grade complete the second half of their Personalized Education Plans (PEP). These plans were started in 8th grade. In this plan, the students fill out class choices for 11th and 12th grades as well as for one year after high school. Therefore, the students have important decisions to make about their futures. During the Sophomore Parent Night parents will get a chance to view their student’s plan, sign the plan and obtain information concerning graduation requirements as well as what to expect for the 11th grade year.
