New River Community and Technical College is proud to announce that students from its Advanced Technology Center (ATC) welding program earned top honors at the 60th annual SkillsUSA competition, held the last weekend of March in Fairmont, West Virginia.
Competing in four events, ATC welding students represented New River CTC with exceptional skill, professionalism, and determination. Their performance resulted in two gold medals and one bronze medal, along with two first-place banners that will be displayed in the college’s new welding facility.
Joseph Roebuck earned gold in Entry Level Welding, while Serina Lawson secured gold in Scrap Metal Sculpture Art. The Fabrication Team, which included Bryce Ballengee, Jesslyn Jones, and Joshua Albright, delivered a strong performance, earning a bronze medal.
The annual SkillsUSA competition showcases the technical abilities and career readiness of students enrolled in career and technical education programs across the region. New River CTC students demonstrated not only advanced welding skills, but also leadership, teamwork, and a strong commitment to excellence.
Faculty members noted the significant growth these students have achieved through both classroom instruction and hands-on training. Their success reflects the strength of the college’s welding program and its focus on preparing students for high-demand careers in the skilled trades.
“These results reflect the strength of our Advanced Technology Center and the dedication of our faculty in preparing students for real-world success,” said Michael Green, Vice President for External Affairs at the college. “We are incredibly proud of these students for representing New River CTC with such talent, discipline, and professionalism at SkillsUSA.”

Participation in SkillsUSA provides valuable real-world experience, allowing students to demonstrate their abilities, gain industry recognition, and build confidence in their craft.
