Dabney S. Lancaster Community College forestry student Nathan Burdette of White Sulphur Springs shown competing in the men’s pole climb in the John G. Palmer Intercollegiate Woodsman’s Team Competition hosted by Haywood Community College at the Pisgah National Forest near Clyde, NC, Oct. 10. Burdette and teammate Dan Ricotta of Charlottesville, who won the event with a time of 7.31 seconds, helped DSLCC bring home the winning team trophy and a new Stihl chain saw. Competitors in this speed event are asked to climb a 32-foot pole and ring a bell at the top. Joe Thacker (right),  interim program head of the Forest Management Technology Program at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College, has been joined by Scott Reigel as program lead. Reigel earned Bachelor of Science Degrees in Forest Resources Management and Wood Industries from West Virginia University and will be teaching mensuration, ecology and silviculture. Reigel and Thacker, who has been teaching forestry at DSLCC for the last five years, are both from Greenbrier County. Dabney S. Lancaster Community College hosted a training exercise Friday, Aug. 14, to prepare staff, faculty, students and local law enforcement officials in the event of a crisis situation. The realistic scenario involved two “perpetrators” and  three “victims.” Responding to the scene were members of the Virginia State Police, Alleghany County Sheriff’s Department, Buena Vista Police Department, Clifton Forge Police Department and the Clifton Forge Rescue Squad. The campus remained on lockdown for several hours, followed by an evaluation of the training exercise by those who played a role.
