Zombies needed!

Volunteers needed! Whether you’re a runner, a fan of ghouls, or just like to be involved in your local community, we need you! On Saturday, Oct. 25, the United Way of Greenbrier Valley’s Zombie 5K, “Run of the Living Dead” and the area’s first and only ½ marathon, “Run United” will take place. The events will raise funds and awareness for United Way of the Greenbrier Valley.

The object of the zombie chase is to capture flags from the runners. Zombies should make sure their costume and make-up stays on them – no spraying blood or body parts falling off and endangering the runners. Also, no grabbing, biting, tripping or anything else that could endanger the runners or zombies.

For the Zombie 5K runners, the object of the race is to finish with flags intact and as fast as possible; flags will be provided. There will be zombies all along the course, so runners will have to keep an eye out. Once all of a runner’s flags are gone, they are considered “infected,” but this by no means diminishes their ability to finish and win the timed portion of the race.

Online registration is available for zombies and runners at www.TriStateRacer.com/RunUnited. Forms can also be downloaded and returned with payment to United Way, P.O. Box 572, Lewisburg, WV 24901. The 5K entry fee is $20 now through Oct. 24 or $25 day of race. Half-marathon early bird entry fee is $70 through Oct. 22; price increases to $85 for on-site registration. Each pre-registered participant will receive a T-shirt. Shirts may not be available for day of registrations. Top finishers will receive an award. This is a family-friendly event.

The Run United Half Marathon is a 13.1-mile scenic course through Lewisburg’s Historic District and rolling hill countryside. Run United starts and ends in downtown Lewisburg, named “America’s Coolest Small Town. The course is run on paved roads. Finisher’s medals will be awarded. Top prizes for each male and female in each age group.
