Maxwelton-William C. “Bill” Lugar, 85, passed away Monday, Aug. 24, 2020, at his home.
Born Nov. 28, 1934, in Covington, VA, he was the son of the late Ashby Godby Lugar, Sr. and Virginia Louise Critzer Lugar.
After graduating high school at Greenbrier Military Academy in Lewisburg, Lugar received his B.A. in accounting from Duke University in 1956 and served in the Army before settling in his childhood hometown of Oceana, WV, where he owned or co-owned several businesses, including Cook Ford Sales, Cook Nissan Sales, Oceana Mobile Homes, and Wyoming Realty, among many others. He was also the founding president of the Bank of Oceana.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Lee Lugar and A.G. Lugar, Jr.; and his beloved dog, Tre’.
Survivors include his loving wife, Bonnie Compton Lugar; children, Lori Lugar of Arlington, VA, Mark Lugar (Deneena) of Grandview, WV, Hollie DeLong of Oceana, WV and Melissa Walker (Steve) of Goode, VA; brother, Fred Lugar (Deb) of Lexington, VA; grandchildren, Jack Steuble of Arlington, VA, Taylor, Ethan and Owen Lugar of Grandview, WV, Seth and Mollie Walker of Goode, VA and Taylor and Rylie DeLong of Oceana.
Graveside memorial service will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 5, at the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Covington, VA, with Pastor Timothy Brewster officiating.
