Greenbrier West won its first sectional game Wednesday evening, defeating visiting Meadow Bridge, 10-2.
The Lady Cavaliers increased their offensive production through the game, scoring one run in the second inning, two in the third, three in the fifth, and four in the sixth. Even in the scoreless fourth, the Cavs demonstrated offensive firepower by loading the bases, only to have the Wildcat pitcher pick up a ground ball and toss to home plate for the forced and final out of the inning. The Wildcats scored their two runs in the third inning, with Makenzie Judy and Shayla Harless crossing the plate.
Katlyn Gray and Brittany Bevins both scored three runs, leading the Cavs. Makayla Adkins scored two runs, and pitched the whole game. Meredith Louderdale and Kenley Posten each scored one run. These five batters were the top five in the batting order, producing all of the runs. Courtney McClung and Taylor Manspile were both in scoring position in the fourth inning, but were left stranded on base.
Adkins registered 11 strikeouts, striking out three in a row in the first, then striking out two batters in each of the second, third, fifth and sixth innings. Only six of the 25 batters she faced got on base; one of those was due to a fielding error. The high scoring sixth and final Cavalier inning could have been even more productive if the game had not ended due to the eight run rule. The Cavs scored four runs, and had Posten on third base, with no outs, when the game ended.
The Lady Cavaliers play Friday evening at home against an as-yet-undetermined opponent.
