In a back and forth contest played Monday, Feb. 1, at Greenbrier West High School, the home court Lady Cavaliers repeatedly went to their fast break to pull away from the Midland Trail Lady Patriots. For three quarters the game was a close one, as the two teams traded baskets and traded the lead.
From a 23-31 deficit at the half, the Cavaliers came back in the third quarter to go ahead 39-36. Knotted up at 42-42 with five minutes left, the Cavaliers were ahead 49-44 with 1:33 remaining in the game. At the finish, Greenbrier West took home the victory, 55-49.
Meredith Lauderdale repeatedly received long passes down the floor to beat the Patriots defense to the bucket.
Greenbrier West Head Coach Jeff Thomas added comments after the game: “It was an exciting game. Midland Trail has a good ball club. They are well coached. We’re lucky to pull this one out tonight. It helped, the way we controlled the ball there at the end. The passing was good. Sometimes we miss those layups, but they were going in tonight.”
Senior Myka Perry said, “Everyone played hard. We didn’t give up, even when we were down ten points. We talked, we motivated, even if someone made a mistake we patted them on the back and said let’s get the next one.”
Taylor Walker, a junior, said, “We came out a little flat, then we started hustling. In the fourth quarter we fought hard and came back, and got the win. The key in the last few minutes was teamwork, hard work, and just wanting to win.”
Makayla Church, a sophomore, said, “We had excellent teamwork, and that’s the hardes we’ve played all year. We needed a big win. We pulled together in the fourth quarter. Played great defense, and played with pride and heart. And our shots started going in.”
