Doris Fields performs as the legendary Bessie Smith.

The White Sulphur Springs Public Library will come alive with the sound of the blues on Thursday, Feb. 26, at 6 p.m., when legendary performer Bessie Smith (1892–1937) – or at least the next best thing – steps into the spotlight. Known worldwide as “The Empress of the Blues,” Smith will be brought to life by acclaimed singer, actress, and historical reenactor Doris Fields, whose powerful voice and commanding stage presence have earned her a devoted following.

Bessie Smith was one of the most electrifying entertainers of the early 20th century. As the highest paid Black performer of the 1920s and 30s, she captivated audiences with her unmistakable vocal fire, her soulful phrasing, and her fearless command of the stage. She sang, danced, acted, and even performed comedy – touring the “Chitlin’ Circuit” and leaving a legacy that continues to influence musicians across genres.

Her modern-day interpreter, Doris Fields – better known as Lady D, West Virginia’s First Lady of Soul – has been performing since the age of three. A singer, songwriter, actress, director, and promoter, she has spent more than two decades touring her celebrated one woman show, The Lady and the Empress, which honors Bessie Smith’s life and music with both artistry and heart.

This performance is part of the West Virginia Humanities Council’s History Alive! program, which brings historical figures to life through carefully researched character portrayals. These presentations invite audiences not just to learn about history, but to interact with it – asking questions, exploring perspectives, and gaining insight into the people who shaped our world. The program is available to nonprofit organizations including libraries, museums, and historical societies.

Light refreshments will be served following the performance. For questions, contact the White Sulphur Springs Public Library at 304 536 1171. The library is located at 344 W Main Street, White Sulphur Springs.

This program is made possible in part by the West Virginia Humanities Council and the Seneca Trail Charitable Foundation, Inc.
