Dabney S. Lancaster Community College has scheduled two annual “Super FAFSA Thursday” events in two locations in November to help students and their families work through the process of filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This is the first step required by most colleges to initiate the process of applying for grants, scholarships, work study placements and student loans.
One session will be held Thursday, Nov. 3, from 4 to 7 p.m., on the DSLCC Clifton Forge, VA, campus in McCarthy Hall, and another on Thursday, Nov. 10, at the DSLCC Rockbridge Regional Center in Buena Vista, VA, also from 4 to 7 p.m.
Students should note the new deadline. The form will now become available three months earlier-October instead of January, and many four-year schools have an earlier priority date. Access to the FAFSA for the 2017-18 school year will begin on Oct. 1, 2016. This better aligns the financial aid and college application processes and gives students more time to apply for aid. Families may use income information from an earlier year; 2015 figures may be used to apply for aid for 2017-2018.
“Super FAFSA Thursday” evenings have been set by DSLCC to reflect the new deadline. These events are hosted by the Talent Search program staff and the DSLCC Financial Aid office. For an appointment, students may call 540-863-2874. Walk-ins may be assisted as openings become available.
