“Weathering the Elements” is the culmination of an idea Trillium’s core artists that started two years ago – a show that would bring together the elements of theatre, dance, and science to provide an educational experience for Greenbrier County youth that’s also highly entertaining.
With the help of our guide, Professor Merryweather, students and adults alike could easily see how the elements of Earth, air, fire, and water work together to not only create weather phenomena like hurricanes and volcanoes, but also how they connect with our bodies and our planet to create the perfect conditions for nurturing and sustaining life. One student said, “Your play was amazing! I loved the part when all of the elements started to cause a tornado.”
Trillium Performing Arts presented its second annual showing of their educational concert “Weathering the Elements” this past week free of charge to 400 third graders from across Greenbrier County. The students were exposed to a curriculum coordinated show which enhanced what they are currently being taught in their respective classrooms. The show focused on core elements of the water cycle with adjacent components in the creation of a hurricane and formation of volcanoes.
“Thank you Trillium for the show. I loved it when Earth and fire made a volcano,” said a student viewer.
Trillium is currently working on a educational performance to present to fifth graders in the county also based on correlating curriculum.
After the performance each group had a Talk-Back in which they could ask questions to the cast and crew regarding various concepts including the production itself or more in-depth knowledge into the science behind the show’s premise. “It was really cool how you guys did the sound effects. All of you taught me something new about science.”
Trillium Performing Arts continue to enrich the community from young to old in interactive and thought provoking arts including dance, music, theater, and film.
