The West Virginia Bridge Design and Build Contest hosted competitors from schools across the state at Marshall University on May 21.
Representing Greenbrier County Schools were the following contenders from Greenbrier East High School and Eastern Greenbrier Middle School: Team 1- Imagineer (Summer McElwain); Team 2 – Thing 1 and Thing 2 (Erin Leslie and Sarah Leslie); Team 3 – SoundTech1 (Carlton Wykle and Jeremy Giese); and Nice Dynamite(Emily McElwain and Catalina Ziegler) of Eastern Greenbrier Middle School.
The state-wide design competition challenges students to create a bridge based on real world scenarios using computer software. From balsa wood kits sent to teams prior to the event, students took to the competition a completed truss bridge designed to support 10 pounds of weight.
McElwain placed third in the state in the Computer Design Contest. Wykle and Giese won the Most Aesthetic Bridge Design award. Participating teams left Marshall University with at least $100 each in prizes and three of the teams are now eligible to compete in the National Engineering Encounters contest.
