Greenbrier East High School Instructor Shane Hanna was honored as the 2013 Greenbrier County Teacher of the Year. Secondary Education Director Deborah White and Technology Director Vicky Cline introduced Hanna during the Nov. 12 meeting of the Greenbrier County Board of Education.
Hanna is a science educator at Greenbrier East High School, teaching Human Anatomy, Advanced Placement Biology and Physical Science. She also sponsors the school’s Health Sciences Technology Academy (HSTA). Hanna fondly remembers her teachers and their positive impact on her as role models. She considers her greatest accomplishment as an educator to be when students return from college and say they were well-prepared for their college course work.
The National Teacher of the Year Program began in 1952 and continues as the oldest and most prestigious national honors program focusing public attention on excellence in teaching. The West Virginia Teacher of the Year Program is coordinated with the national program and annually recognizes all county teachers of the year at a ceremony in Charleston. A committee appointed by the State Superintendent evaluates all county nominees and interviews a select group of finalists before naming the West Virginia Teacher of the Year. Shane Hanna will represent Greenbrier County as she moves on to compete for West Virginia Teacher of the Year.
