Organ Cave Community Educational Outreach Service club met for their May 18 meeting at Elizabeth Chapel UM Church, with the meeting called to order by Janet Johnson. Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag.

During the Greenbrier County CEOS Achievement program the Organ Cave Club tied for 1st in Continuing Education, and placed 1st in Family Issues for their 2014 club work. They also received certificates for 2,000 hours of volunteer service, 1,500 of those hours were completed in 2014. Johnson thanked everyone for their dedicated service to the club and also to the community.

Current reports were given on Continuing Education by Carolyn Rodgers and Health Motivator by Sandy Perry. “Listen to your Body” was the health tip by Carolyn Rodgers. Layola Sarver displayed several lap quilts she had made, each containing two hand embroidered squares. The lap quilts will be given to shut-ins and nursing home residents. Janet Johnson showed two quilt tops she had made, and when completed will be given for gifts.

The study program, “Laugh a Latte,” was given by Janet Johnson. How can something so simple as laughter be so good for us? Using laughter as a support to a healthier life will have strong and lasting benefits. A long history of using humor as a strong support for healing therapy has been used since the 14th century. Laughter and emotional resiliency have the following emotional rewards of laughter: combats stress; provides moments of joy; eases anxiety and lifts depression; and lightens a threatening situation. The physical advantages of a good laugh stimulates the immune system; helps to relieve pain; relaxes tense muscles; speeds up oxygen to our bodies; helps regulate the heart rate; helps lower blood pressure and blood sugar in Type-2 diabetes patients. Members were asked to bring a funny story to promote laughter to the next meeting.

Refreshments were served by Carolyn Rodgers. Members attending were: Sandy Perry, Layola Sarver, Carolyn Rodgers and Janet Johnson. The next meeting of the Organ Cave CEOS will be June 15.
