Students on the Greenbrier Valley Campus of New River Community and Technical College are participating in the VITA program (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) through Mar. 28. The VITA Program offers free tax preparation for both federal and state income tax returns. Student volunteers are required to become certified with the Internal Revenue Service prior to participating in the program. Returns will be reviewed by local Certified Public Accountants for accuracy.
The service is free. Starting Jan. 24, student volunteers are available every Thursday and Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. until noon. There will be a limit of 25 tax returns prepared each day. Electronic filing (E-File) is available and refunds can be directly deposited into a bank account. No returns will be prepared on Thursday, Mar. 19 due to Spring Break.
The service is available for low and moderate income taxpayers who do not own businesses, farms or rental properties. No appointments are accepted.
