“Keys to Creative Writing,” a foundational class in creative writing, is a new offering from New River Community and Technical College, taught by author Belinda Anderson and beginning Thursday, Jan. 29.

There’s no need to worry about winter weather, as the college is providing the three-week workshop via audio conference call. This is the first of three classes in a winter/spring series conducted by Anderson for the college.

This class will cover fundamental elements that are key to various genres of creative writing, building to additional techniques that can transform basic skills into enriched writing that fully captures and engages readers.

Anderson has worked both as a teacher and as a manuscript consultant for writers with a wide range of experience. “I still remember my own journey as a beginning writer and find it gratifying and inspirational to help other writers grow their writing talent,” she said.

The class will be conducted through one-hour conference calls that include lecture, with time for questions and participant sharing, and group e-mail follow-up as needed. Students can attend the class with an internet conference call connection or by phone, including landlines. No high-speed internet is required.

The workshop will provide opportunities for writing. It is designed both for beginning writers and those who would like a refresher in the fundamentals.

Anderson is listed on two literary maps and is the author of three collections of short stories and a children’s novel, published by Mountain State Press. Her fiction also is included in several anthologies and she has extensive nonfiction credits, including a 12-volume commissioned history series.

“The characters jump off the page and talk to you in their own voices and let you peek into their inner thoughts,” author Donna S. Meredith wrote in a review of Anderson’s fiction. “Beautifully crafted stories with strong voices and a strong sense of place.”

The cost for the class is $95. The registration deadline is Jan. 16. Participants will be emailed the conference call number and access codes after registering for the class.

Visit newriver.edu/community for information on upcoming classes or register for the course or contact Gloria Kincaid (304-793-6101, gkincaid@newriver.edu).
