“Nobody ever achieved true success without overcoming some adversity.” Well, that was the phrase that kept me focused this past week. Water problems, NO practice at school. Schools closed until further notice, winter weather advisory and the flu were just some of the stumbling blocks this past week. However, as one of my wrestlers said, “Coach, if I want to be great, I’ll find a way!” And that pretty much summed up this past week. Great people and Great Athletes find a way to overcome adversity and continue forward toward their goal. I am very proud of all the Wrestlers who made that extra effort to help themselves and the Team. Also, a Big Thank You to the people behind the scenes who gave us the opportunity to get better.
Now let’s talk wrestling. Thursday night we travel to Beckley (Weather permitting) to wrestle Woodrow Wilson and Oak Hill for the “Coal Country Challenge” Trophy. It currently resides in Beckley and we are not too happy about it being there. We hope to bring it back home this year. On Friday we have the Greenbrier County Championships at Greenbrier East High School (water problems permitting). The Middle School Teams will wrestle at 6 p.m. with the High School Teams match immediately following. It will be our Senior Night. Please stop by to give recognition to our four seniors. (Katie Ervin, Josiah Solak, Adam Zimmerman and Evan Roberts) It should be a great evening of wrestling. Greenbrier West is one of the top wrestling teams in the state and the 2013 State Champions. Between the two teams there will be over 16 State Ranked Wrestlers and numerous State Champions and Place-Winners. An excellent evening of excitement for the Wrestling Community.
TRIVIA: We hosted the Coalfield Conference Invitational Wrestling Tournament last year. Who won the “Most Outstanding Wrestler” Award? Hint: He will be wrestling at Greenbrier East on Friday.

EGMS UPDATE: Congratulations to Liam Lusher (2nd), Jordan Williams (2nd ), Jaylon Battaile (8th) and Zach Mullins (8th) for placing at the WSAZ Championship. We have had 11 EGMS Wrestlers place at the WSAZ Tournament in the last three years. The future looks bright.
