The West Virginia Dual Team Wrestling State Championships were held this past Saturday at The Greenbrier Resort. WOW! What a great experience for all eight teams, coaches, fans and wrestlers. I have been involved with wrestling for quite a while and this event was special for so many reasons. Thank you to ALL the supporters, fans, and volunteers who made this tremendous and memorable event possible. We have received compliments and praise from throughout our town and the wrestling community throughout the state. As I have always said, “There is greatness all around us– use it!” Great people will share. Great people will tell you their secrets. Look for them, call them on the phone, Google them or buy their books. Go where they are, get around them, talk to them. It is easy to be great when you get around great people! One of the greatest coaches, John Wooden, had a philosophy that every day he is supposed to help someone who can never reciprocate; that’s his obligation. What’s your obligation? Be great!
Trivia: I have been blessed with the same four wrestling coaches on my staff for the past five years. Can you name them?
Upcoming events and highlights:
Our wrestlers will go the Coalfield Conference on Feb. 7 and 8 at Oak Hill High School. We have been runner-up the last couple of years. Maybe we can bring home the title this year.
We currently have seven wrestlers ranked in the Top 10 in the State. Zach Mullins, Landen Hoover, Colby Piner, Alex Zimmerman, Owen Quinn, Nick Thomas and Thomas Mullins. The Regional Championship is Saturday, February 15, at Riverside High School. The top four at each weight class qualify for the State Championships in Huntington. Good Luck to Micah Fisher and Emma Kesterson as they travel to Parkersburg this Saturday for the first ever Girls State Championships.
Eastern Greenbrier Middle School: Many middle school wrestlers are training for the Jr. State Championships later this month. Good luck!

Trivia Answer: The Greenbrier East Wrestling team has been lucky to have Lou Withrow, Andy Evans, Mark Solak and Tracy Asbury for the past five years. It’s not a coincidence that we continue to improve every season. “Consistency wins!”
