On Monday, Jan. 20, at approximately 10:45 p.m., members of the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s office were dispatched to a residence on Leonard Long Road near Renick for reports of a gunshot wound. Upon arrival they discovered that the victim, Stephen Bennett, a 48-year-old male and owner of the residence had been shot in the head by a 36-year-old female, Tyler Truman, also a resident of the home. At the time there were also five children in the residence.
Upon further investigation, and according to the statements of the victim, Truman had fired two shots at Bennett, and one of the fired rounds struck Mr. Bennett in the side of the head. Bennett was flown to a trauma center in Virginia and Truman was taken into custody, processed, and transported to Southern Regional Jail charged with attempted murder. Child Protective Services were contacted to assist with the children. The crime scene was processed by the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Team.
The Sheriff’s office was assisted by the West Virginia State Police, Greenbrier County Emergency Ambulance Service and the Greenbrier County Emergency Operations Center.
