Carroll Bassett of the West Virginia Cave Conservancy presents Alex Lewis of Frankford with the VAR Land Owner Recognition Award. The VAR stands for the Virginia Area Region and is a part of the National Speleological Society, a national organization of cavers created to support the protection of caves and the recreational sport of caving. The VAR Landowners Recognition Award is given each year to a landowner who has supported access and protection of caves within the region. Alex has over the last several years been an ardent supporter of efforts to discover and map caves culminating in the discovery of several caves on his property, one of which may be of significant importance in the understanding of the hydrology and cave systems of the area.
