Dr. Robert Conte, Historian Emeritus, Greenbrier Resort

The General Andrew Lewis Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met for their October 17 meeting near to the October 19, 1781 surrender date by British General Cornwallis to General George Washington who was greatly aided by the Franco-American forces of Marquis de Lafayette and Count de Rochambeau.  This momentous occasion was noted during the meeting as a masterful National Defense observance.  Karen Lee McClung hosted the group in her home filled with many Greenbrier Valley antiques. Nancy Greenstreet was her co-hostess.  As the members gathered, they were treated to a delicious desert.  The meeting was called to order by Vice Regent Judy Deegans in the absence of Regent Suzanne Cronquist who was at Yorktown at the celebration of this victory.

Dr. Robert Conte, Historian Emeritus of the Greenbrier Resort was introduced as the speaker.  He gave a history of the bunker at the Greenbrier and regaled the members with stories about his years as the historian and tour leader at the hotel.

Members Karen Lee McClung (left) and Dr. Gretchen Lovett (right) begin loading donations to be delivered to western North Carolina flood victims.

The members brought many items needed by the North Carolina victims of Hurricane Helene.  These will be transported to North Carolina.

Announcements were made concerning the November and December meetings and the meeting was adjourned.
