Teddi Knight, a first grader in Ms. Crane’s class at Lewisburg Elementary, grew a sunflower with a 52-inch circumference. Peyton Peplowski, a fifth grader in Ms. Myles’ class, grew a 46-1/4” sunflower. Teddi and Peyton both received the new grand prize award of $50, along with a Birds of West Virginia book. All students who presented a sunflower to be measured received $1 and a conservation certificate. The Lewisburg House and Garden Club is pleased by the students’ continued enthusiasm for the contest and thrilled to increase the previous grand prize from $25 to $50.

As always, it was great fun for members Gretchen Lovett, Sue McKinney, Carol Olson, Marit and Don Withrow, and Townley and Trip Hamilton to visit the impressive schools and measure each beautiful sunflower. Many thanks to the principals, teachers, and secretaries who also contribute to the success of this project.

The Lewisburg House and Garden Club has been distributing seeds, teaching about nature’s cycle, the value of feeding birds, and organizing this friendly contest since 1959. Club members will return to the schools in May to distribute sunflower seed packets for the 2026 growing season.
