We must be accountable to the US Constitution
Dear Editor:
On Tuesday morning, Dollar Day at the WV State Fair, I stopped by the Army National Guard (NG) tent to speak with the four members sitting at their table. My only concern was to ask what they had heard about a possible deployment to Washington, DC. Their comment, “Oh no, we won’t be going, it’s too far,” indicated they had little knowledge of national events. I responded by encouraging them to treat people in DC with respect and kindness. The three young men blankly nodded, however, the young woman acknowledged me with a knowing smile.
My sincere hope is that all NG members are given a true overview of the US Constitution, as well as shown footage of the 2021 attack on the US Capitol. Young adults so often receive their news from social media that is often untrue and biased, and may contain outright lies. National Guard members must not be used as pawns in our country’s attempted path to greatness. Military might does not make right.
The United States of America must be held accountable to its Constitution rather than to cowering elected officials and their moneyed corporate supporters. The USA is a better country than how we appear at this moment in time.
