Led by Cadet Amber Clark (left), representatives of Greenbrier West High School’s JROTC battalion presented a program update to members of the Greenbrier County Board of Education on Sept. 13. Clark shared with pride that the number of students enrolled in JROTC at Greenbrier West High School has doubled from 70 cadets in 2015 to 141 cadets in 2016. Budgetary issues threatened the program’s continuation last year. Advocacy efforts of JROTC students, past program participants and concerned community members helped keep the program in force. Assisting Cadet Amber Clark with the presentation were GWHS JROTC Cadets Gigi Ortiz (front row); Dwayne McMillion (back row center); and GWHS JROTC Instructor, Colonel Robert Busick (right). On behalf of the board of education, President Jeanie Wyatt expressed great pride in the GWHS JROTC program and its student participants.
