It is with joy to report a 16.28 percent gain for the first nine months of 2024, bringing the Community Foundation to $21.9 million in total invested funds with GVCF. What a fantastic way to kick-off our 25th Anniversary celebrations!
In the third quarter, we focused on community engagement, scholarship management, and welcomed the Roy Dean Patterson Memorial Scholarship Fund. This scholarship will be awarded to assist high school seniors graduating from Greenbrier County who are continuing their education at a college or accredited vocational school. Like Roy Patterson, these students must exhibit integrity, patience, a strong work ethic, and love of family.
In 2024 to date, over $200,000 in scholarships funds were distributed from the application system we administer in partnership with our regional high schools. Of that amount, nearly $125,000 were funded by scholarships managed by GVCF. As always, it was a joy to attend our area high schools to present certificates to these hardworking students. So far this year, two new scholarship funds have been started with GVCF. Scholarships are a wonderful way to remember loved ones into perpetuity and we welcome the opportunity to discuss starting scholarship funds with individuals or organizations.
In July and August, we awarded $8,500 to following organizations in grants from the GVCF Community Fund and the Mary B. Nickell Fund for Arts Education:
- Greenbrier County 4-H Clubs
- God’s Way Home
- Lindside United Methodist Food Pantry
- Greenbrier West High School
- Pocahontas County High School
- Frankford Elementary School
In August, in an effort to support several of our partner organizations, we continued our annual tradition and purchased two hogs from the Greenbrier Monroe Youth Livestock Association Auction at the State Fair of West Virginia, which we had locally processed and then donated to the Monroe County Coalition. Michelle and her wonderful team then distribute sausage to food banks serving residents throughout Monroe County.
