Greenbrier Valley Brewing Company (GVBC) announces their Ultimate Frisbee Exhibition game on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 4 p.m. at the brewery with the Fuster Ultimate Frisbee team. As one of the sponsors of the Fuster Ultimate, based in Charleston, WV, GVBC is excited to bring this game to the area for people to learn to play, participate or just watch. After the game, everyone can enjoy the father/son band of Duo Fields playing in the Tap Room at 7 p.m.
The Fuster Ultimate team has been together for three years and, with the help of sponsors, play in about eight tournaments a year throughout the eastern United States, including Wildwood Ultimate, the world’s largest beach ultimate tournament in Wildwood, NJ.
With players that hail from all over the Mountain State and range in age from 21-44, the team members of Fuster display their trademark, friendly Appalachian spirit everywhere they compete. Both men and woman are on the team, and as they say, are “An active, adventurous group who have all decided to settle down and live in West-by-God Virginia and play Ultimate Frisbee any chance we get.”
Developed in 1968 by students at Columbia High School in Maplewood, NJ, Ultimate Frisbee resembles traditional sports in its athletic requirements. However, unlike most sports, its focus is on self-officiating, even at the highest levels of competition. Called “Spirit of the Game,” this concept is integrated into the basic philosophy of the sport, written into the rules, and practiced at all levels of the game from local leagues to the World Games.
Ultimate is similar to football with two team on a field with end zones, but with a flying disc instead of a ball. Teams score by catching a pass in their opponents’ end zones. Non-stop action and limitless flying options of the disc make this a sport that is both fun to play and fun to watch.
Duo Fields is made up of Fuster Ultimate team member Scott Fields on guitar and his son Devin Fields on drums. Duo Fields has played in pubs and taverns in the Charleston area, most recently at Louie’s at Mardi Gras Casino and The Boulevard Tavern, and plays a mixture of acoustic rock and alternative hits from the 1970s to present, as well as a healthy dose of original songs.
Lisa Stansell, marketing director of GVBC says “We’ve been working with our schedules for many months and luckily we are able to have the team at the brewery the evening of Taste of our Towns when thousands of people will be in Lewisburg. I know from personal experience that a bit of exercise after sampling yummy foods for a good cause all afternoon is just the ticket – even if it’s just watching others do the exercising.”
The GVBC Ultimate Frisbee Exhibition game welcomes players of all ages and genders. Those interested in learning and or playing can show up at the brewery beginning at 3:30 pm. The game will start at 4 p.m. Spectators can bring lawn chairs for the sidelines.
