Playing at Shady Spring Wednesday night, the Greenbrier East baseball Spartans put on a relentless display of batting that resulted in a 19-1 win. The productivity increased over the first four innings, as the Spartans scored one run in the first, four runs in the second, five runs in the third, and nine runs in the fourth, before shutting down the fireworks display in the fifth inning. Most of the runs in the nine-run fourth inning came after there were two outs.
Colby Johnson went four-for-four at the plate. Jonathan Carr, Johnson, and Daylon Colley combined for seven doubles. East had no errors, and one double play, from Rylie Smith at second base, to Daylon Colley at first. There were fourteen hits by the Spartans, four by Carr, two each by Johnson and Frank Ford and Daylon Colley, and one apiece by Blake Colley, Nathaniel Byers, Joey Powell and Thomas Willis. Frank Ford and Joey Powell did the pitching.
The game was played under the lights at Shady Spring’s field, with a strong southern wind gusting throughout the game. Greenbrier East’s next game is away, Friday night, April 22, at James Monroe.
