Board member Janice Cooley invited to Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony
The Greenbrier Historical Society (GHS) continues its commitment to honoring the legacy of Katherine Johnson, the pioneering African American mathematician whose contributions to NASA were pivotal during the Space Race. As a native of White Sulphur Springs, Johnson’s achievements have been a source of pride for the Greenbrier Valley community.
In recognition of Katherine Johnson’s extraordinary contributions, GHS has dedicated multiple initiatives to celebrate her life and work. These include educational programs, a play, scholarships, exhibits, and collaborations with local schools to inspire the next generation of scientists and mathematicians. The society’s efforts are part of a broader mission to ensure that Johnson’s legacy, along with the contributions of other women in science, is remembered and honored.
In a remarkable acknowledgment of these efforts, one of GHS’s esteemed Board Members, Janice Cooley, has been invited to attend a prestigious Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony. The ceremony, set to take place on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 3 p.m. in Emancipation Hall at the United States Capitol, will honor Katherine Johnson, Dr. Christine Darden, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson, as well as all the women who played a crucial role in the success of NASA during the Space Race. This recognition follows the passage of the Congressional Gold Medal Act, which seeks to highlight the invaluable contributions of these trailblazing women.
Janice Cooley expressed her gratitude for the invitation: “I am deeply honored to represent the Greenbrier Historical Society at this momentous event. Katherine Johnson’s story is one of incredible perseverance, brilliance, and dedication. Her legacy continues to inspire generations, and it is a privilege to be part of the ongoing efforts to celebrate her life and the contributions of so many other extraordinary women. This ceremony is not just a recognition of their achievements, but a reminder of the importance of preserving and sharing these vital stories with the world.”
The invitation extended to Ms. Cooley is a significant honor, reflecting her dedication to preserving the history and legacy of remarkable figures like Katherine Johnson. The Greenbrier Historical Society is immensely proud of this recognition and looks forward to continuing its work in celebrating the achievements of women who have shaped history.
In addition to our efforts to honor Katherine Johnson, the Greenbrier Historical Society is committed to celebrating the vital roles and accomplishments of women throughout history. Our Herstory Exhibit, now open to the public, highlights the influence and impact of women in the Greenbrier Valley and beyond. This exhibit is part of our broader initiative to ensure that the stories of remarkable women, both past and present, are remembered and celebrated for generations to come. The Greenbrier Historical Society invites the community to join us in these efforts by visiting the Herstory Exhibit.
