Logan Foley was named state winner at the VFW Voice of Democracy awards dinner in Clarksburg on Jan. 17. Foley’s essay will be entered into national competition. As state winner, he received an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, DC, Feb. 28 – Mar. 4, to tour the city, be honored by the VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary, and receive his portion of $152,000 in national awards, the top scholarship being $30,000.
The Voice of Democracy contest is open to students in grade 9-12. Entrants record their original 3-5 minute essay on a standard cassette tape or audio CD. Rainelle Post #4484 and its Ladies Auxiliary sponsor the contest for the local schools. Foley won at post and district levels, which qualified him for the state level.
Logan is a ninth grader at Greenbrier West. He resides in Rupert with his parents, Chris and Ann Foley.
