Earlier this week, a crack appeared in the pavement in Stratton Alley behind City Hall. When city crews broke through the asphalt, they found a 15-foot-deep sinkhole, directly under the city’s property line, exposing water lines and undermining the brick structure fronting Court Street. The building houses the Family Court offices and Greenbrier Printing and is owned by Bill Bowling. As seen in the photo, large rocks have already been dumped into the opening. Concrete will seal up the hole and also be pumped into the space under the building. This sinkhole was apparently not an unknown threat, as evidenced by the concrete support wall and I-beam structure installed along the base of the building (at right) set in place some years ago.
