Police are investigating a shooting that left one man dead in Fairlea on Wednesday, Jan. 20.
According to a press release from Bruce Sloan of the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office, on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at approximately 4:15 p.m., members of the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office, West Virginia State Police and Lewisburg Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting at an apartment located at Circle J Square.
Upon arrival of officers on the scene, Clayton Ware, 33, of Fairlea, was located in his apartment after having sustained serious injuries. An initial investigation revealed that Travis Ray Norwood, 29, of Fairlea, reported being the victim of an alleged robbery attempt by Ware. The two individuals had apparently spent some time together that afternoon before a severe altercation occurred between the two of them in Norwood’s apartment, resulting in a gunshot wound to Ware. Ware subsequently returned to the adjacent apartment where he would succumb to his injuries shortly thereafter.
The investigation is continuing as officers attempt to determine the sequence of events leading up to and during the shooting.
Upon conclusion of the investigation, including autopsy results from the State Medical Examiner’s Office, the findings will be presented to the Greenbrier County Prosecuting Attorney.
Deputy S. W. Hudnall, of the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office, is the lead investigator.
