The green grass and those little pesky dandelion weeds are popping up all over White Sulphur Springs. While some see weeds, others see wishes. The festival that celebrates this tenacious little weed is coming again to the city on May 24, 25 and 26. We have a lot of things going on and hope you plan to join us over the weekend.
The WV Dandelion Festival and Gillespie’s Flowers are planning a project that will begin on Thursday, May 23. Gillespie’s Flowers will be posting more information and details on social media.
Friday evening will host the Art Show at the WSS Library, along with vendors and children’s activities. There is a Cruise-In and Sock Hop along Main Street with live entertainment by DJ “Big Ugly” sponsored by Boggs Used Cars and Towing and Masters Auto Center. Please note that Main Street will be closed to thru traffic at the First Citizens Bank along Main Street to the post office from 6 to 9 p.m. You will still be able to get around town by using side streets during this time.
Plan to attend the annual Fishing Derby at the National Fish Hatchery, registration begins at 8 am on Saturday, May 25. There will be fishing times available for all ages until approximately 12 noon.
Hill Billy Fun is providing fun things for the kids, and will be located in the bottom parking lot of Midland Trail Park in front of the Veterans Memorial. They will have an Inflatable putt-putt course for all to enjoy. We hope it is sunny and warm, because rumor has it that there could be some water fun involved too!
Events on Saturday include, but are not limited to, Talkin’ and Walkin’ like a Chicken contest, a Turkey Calling Contest, cloggers, a scavenger hunt, a bicycle race, dandy leg contest, and a strolling magician. Also on Saturday we have brought back the softball tournament this year with a slow pitch, single elimination tournament scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at the Dick Gunnoe Memorial Ball Park. The St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church will be having a giant yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, to coincide with the festival. The Methodist Men will be hosting a Pancake Supper from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church as well.
We are looking forward to having the Taco Trolley, Dippin’ Dots and Tastee Chef providing some treats for your festival enjoyment. In addition, the New Vision Baptist Church will be set up on Friday and Saturday serving food, and the Lions Club of WSS will be giving away hot dogs for a donation on Saturday.
Entertainment for Saturday includes Richard Hefner and the Black Mountain Bluegrass Boys, Thomas Taylor, and Main Stage Saturday evening beginning at 7 p.m. is Seldom Free. Don’t forget the fireworks at 10 p.m.!
Sunday, veterans and their families are invited to a veterans luncheon in Paisley Park from noon to 1:30 p.m.. Country Road Smokehouse is preparing the food and will be on site. The Veterans Memorial Ceremony is in Old Mill Park on Sunday and will begin at 2 p.m. There will also be carriage rides by Rodes Farm and Carola Carriage Service downtown on Sunday afternoon. The WV Dandelion Festival Memorial Day Parade begins at 5 p.m. (line up will be on Ingleside Avenue beginning at 4 p.m.). All parade participants need to plan to access the parade route from Mountain Avenue.
